Out of Office: Employee Appreciation Day at Equity Methods

On a sunny afternoon in early November, Equity Methods stepped outside for our annual Employee Appreciation Day.

If you’ve spent any time in the Phoenix area, you know that fall is the season locals wait for all year. The summer heat finally breaks, the sky turns a deeper shade of blue, and what follows is months of great weather that makes going outdoors feel like the obvious thing to do.

A Sunny Day in the Park

Scottsdale Ranch Park sits in one of Phoenix metro’s nicest residential corners, a sprawling green space tucked away from the bustle without actually being far from anything. By the time the Operations team and the caterer finished setting up, the park had that particular quality that good November days in Arizona tend to have: warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to actually move around, with a sky that seemed almost unreasonably clear.

The setup was simple. A caterer’s tent sheltered a full barbecue spread with sides, desserts, and cold drinks. A ramada held gear for whatever anyone felt like doing: kickball, volleyball, basketball, or tabletop games like Jenga, Connect 4, and Uno. From noon to four, the afternoon belonged to everyone.

What the Day Looked Like

Informal lunches have a way of bringing together people who don’t usually cross paths during a regular workday: folks from different teams, different seniority levels, and different corners of the office. Some were catching up on the latest at work; others were talking about hobbies, the weekend, or nothing in particular.

A kickball game materialized on the field. A Jenga tower appeared near the ramada. Volleyball and basketball teams formed. A few groups just found a good patch of shade and stayed there.

By the time everyone gathered for a group photo as the day wound down, the park still had that easy, unhurried energy that good days tend to hold onto.

The Longer View

It’s easy to treat an event like Employee Appreciation Day as a nice gesture and leave it at that. But the real effects tend to show up later, in ways that are harder to see on the day itself.

Teams that know each other outside of work communicate more directly. People ask for help more readily. Collaboration moves faster because the social friction that slows it down has already been worn away. For a firm where the day-to-day work can be demanding (client deadlines, technical precision, high expectations across the board), that kind of investment pays off in concrete ways.

Equity Methods has been intentional about creating these moments, whether through EAD, the annual Offsite, or other events throughout the year. The reasoning is straightforward: the quality of our work depends on the quality of the relationships behind it. A November afternoon at a Scottsdale park, it turns out, is a pretty good place to build both.
